History of Shri Mahalingeshwara Temple

According to historical facts temple is identified as “Talekude temple”. In Sahyadri Khanda history, it has been said that famous shiva bhakthas , “khara” and “ratta” installed the idol of Mahalingeshwara and worshipped him.

Shri Madhwacharya also visited temple before taking Sanyasa and also taking Sanyasa. While taking Shri Krishna idol from seashore to udupi, Madhwacharya kept the idol of Krishna in the temple and offered pooja. Even ‘ Madhwa vijaya’ proves this details. To prove these details , Ashtamatas Matadhipathis visit the temple before ascending the Sarvajnya Peeta during Paryaya celebration.

There is a inscription (shasana) in the temple which tells that one of the Alupa kings offered Bramhakalasha pooja to Mahalingeshwara.

According to vastu experts architectural style of Garbagudi and Theerthamantapa was constructed on the basis of shilpa shastra

There are idols of Lord Ganapathi and Annapoorneshwari devi inside temple, and Parivara Daivas such as Kshetrapala, Raktheshwari, Nandigona, Bobbarya in the outer side of temple. Anekallu , Garbagudi, Theertha Mantapa, main Balipeeta are of rare architectural style.
